That’s why mature organisations are shifting from centralised control to distributed accountability. Data contracts help teams agree on expectations upfront. SLAs bring clarity on reliability. Federated governance allows each domain to move fast while still aligning with enterprise standards. And domain ownership ensures that the teams closest to the data are responsible for its quality.

The goal isn’t to choose between innovation and governance—it’s to design a system where both can coexist without slowing each other down.

and the truth is, neither side is wrong. Product and growth teams need agility: quick dashboards, fast SQL, rapid experiments,

and the freedom to ship without waiting for perfect data. Governance teams, on the other hand, carry the long-term responsibility:

maintaining accuracy, preserving lineage, enforcing standards, and preventing the silent buildup of data debt that eventually slows everyone down.
