Does anyone else spend more time updating spreadsheets than making decisions?

I work in a typical office role and lately I’ve noticed that a huge part of my day is spent collecting data, updating spreadsheets, checking reports, and reconciling numbers from different sources.

The strange thing is that everyone talks about being “data-driven,” but it feels like most of the effort goes into preparing information rather than actually using it to make decisions.

By the time the data is cleaned, verified, shared, and discussed, the opportunity to act on it has often passed.

I’m curious if others are seeing the same thing in their organizations.

Are teams genuinely becoming more data-driven, or are we just getting better at creating reports and dashboards?

What has helped your company move from reporting data to actually using it for faster decisions?

As someone working in an office environment, I can definitely relate to this.

A lot of organizations say they want to be data-driven, but in practice, employees spend a surprising amount of time collecting, cleaning, validating, and updating data before any real decision gets made.

I’ve seen situations where teams spend days preparing reports for a meeting, only to spend the meeting discussing whether the numbers are correct rather than what actions to take.

The problem usually isn’t a lack of data. It’s a lack of trust, ownership, and accessibility. When data lives across multiple spreadsheets, systems, and departments, people naturally spend more time reconciling information than using it.

The most effective teams I’ve worked with focus on reducing the distance between data and decisions. They automate repetitive reporting, establish clear ownership of metrics, and make sure everyone is working from the same definitions.

Being data-driven isn’t about creating more reports.

It’s about making decisions with confidence and acting faster because the data is already trusted.
