This is a very relevant question and something many candidates experience.
In practice, most data interviews tend to evaluate a mix of memorization and applied thinking, but the balance is often skewed. Structured rounds like SQL, case questions, or product metrics can reward pattern recognition and preparation rather than true problem-solving ability.
The gap becomes visible when candidates who perform well in interviews struggle with ambiguity, stakeholder communication, or translating analysis into decisions in real roles.
At the same time, interviews do need some level of standardization, which is why companies rely on repeatable formats. The challenge is designing them in a way that captures how someone thinks, not just what they remember.
The most effective interviews, in my view, are those that simulate real scenarios, open-ended problems, messy data, and trade-offs, where there isn’t a single correct answer. That’s where actual skill starts to show.
