Why does everyone seem to be choosing data science these days?

I keep seeing a lot of people jumping into data science especially those without a tech background. Curious why this field is getting so much attention compared to others like cloud, web dev, or cybersec. Is it the salary hype? the job flexibility? or just that it sounds cooler than traditional dev roles? I’m personally torn between data science and going deeper into backend/web dev, so just wanted to hear from folks who’ve already picked a path. what made you choose data over other domains, and was it worth it?

yes a lot of people are drawn in by the salary buzz and job flexibility. But what truly sets data science apart is the impact. You’re not just building systems; you’re influencing decisions at the highest levels using evidence.

I chose data over traditional dev roles because I enjoy solving ambiguous, real-world problems not just writing code, but asking the right questions and validating them with data.

It’s not for everyone. If you prefer well-defined tasks and structured workflows, backend dev might suit you better. But if you’re comfortable with uncertainty and like bridging tech with business, data science is incredibly rewarding — and yes, still very worth it.

I’m a data science undergrad, and yeah — the hype is partly real. The salary and job titles sound cool, but what pulled me in was the mix of logic and creativity. I liked solving open-ended problems, finding patterns, and telling stories with data.

Compared to backend or web dev, data science felt more flexible — you can apply it in tons of industries without switching your core skill set.

If you’re into structured systems, backend might be your thing. But if you’re curious, analytical, and like working with real-world problems, data science is definitely worth exploring.
